About Jordi Fernández
Jordi Fernández is a Spanish professional basketball coach and the current head coach of the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA. Fernández began coaching at 15 in Spain with youth teams at clubs like CB Sant Josep de Badalona and CB Sant Boi. Later, he was an athletic trainer for Club Bàsquet l’Hospitalet in LEB Plata. He coached in Norway and the Netherlands and attended a University of Oklahoma summer camp before joining the Impact Basketball Academy in Las Vegas in 2006.
His NBA career started in 2009 as a player development coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers under Mike Brown, working with players like Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson. From 2014–2016, he was head coach of the Canton Charge in the G League, posting a 62–38 record and reaching consecutive Eastern Conference finals. He served as an assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets (2016–2022), earning praise for his work ethic, and then as associate head coach for the Sacramento Kings (2022–2024), helping them reach the 2023 playoffs, their first since 2006. Fernández led the Kings’ 2022 Summer League team, guiding Keegan Murray to MVP honors.
Internationally, Fernández was an assistant for Spain's U19 (2013) and senior national teams (2017–2019) and Nigeria at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He coached Canada's men's national team from June 2023 to February 2025, securing a bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and Olympic qualification in 2024. Hired by the Nets on April 22, 2024, he’s the first Spaniard to hold an NBA head coaching position.
