About John Tavares
John Tavares is one of the NHL's top stars for the Toronto Maple Leafs. There was much expected from Tavares after he was the top overall pick of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Since making his debut later that year, he has been among the New York Islanders leading scorers each season. Tavares was named to his first All-Star team in 2012. A year later, he was a finalist for the Hart Memorial Trophy and led theIslanders to the playoffs for the first time in 2013. That banner performance helped lead New York to name Tavares captain heading into the 2013-14 season. At the conclusion of the 2014-15 season, he finished runner-up for the Art Ross Trophy with a career-high 86 points. Tavares has often competed for Canada in international competition, including helping his country win gold at the 2014 Olympics. Prior to arriving in the NHL, he had a historic juniors career in the Ontario Hockey League. He holds an OHL career record with 215 goals. Tavares was both the 2006 CHL Rookie of the Year and the 2007CHL Player of the Year.
