John Amaechi

John Amaechi is known for his outspoken opinions and trailblazing efforts for gay athletes. Amaechi became the first former NBA player to come out when he wrote his memoir,“Man in the Middle” (2007). He had an extensive career in both the NBA and overseas. Amaechi spent his first season with the Cleveland Cavaliers before suiting up for the next three years in France, Greece, Italy, and the United Kingdom. He then had the best stretch of his career with theOrlando Magic and finished his career playing two seasons with theUtah Jazz. Amaechi is now a world-renowned organizational psychologist, executive coach, Professor of Leadership at the University of Exeter Business School and bestselling author of two more books“The Promises of Giants” (2021) and“It’s Not Magic: The Ordinary Skills of Exceptional Leaders” (2025),adviser to FTSE 100 boards, a LinkedIn Top Voice, and the recipient of the Sport Industry Integrity and Impact Award, John is recognized as one of the most influential voices in leadership and organizational culture. He is a member of several Psychology organizations and is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Through his work with the ABC Foundation, Amaechi built the Amaechi Basketball Centre in Manchester.
