About Geno Auriemma
Geno Auriemma is the head coach of the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. Upon graduating from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Auriemma was hired as an assistant coach at St. Joseph’s University. Auriemma then spent two years as an assistant coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. In 1981, Auriemma returned to the collegiate level and served as an assistant coach at the University of Virginia. Auriemma assumed the head coaching position at Connecticut in 1985. Prior to his arrival, UConn’s women’s basketball team had only recorded one winning season. Since Auriemma arrived, the Huskies have recorded 9 NCAA Division I National Championships. Auriemma alone has won 6 national Naismith College Coach of the Year Awards. When he is not coaching at UConn, Auriemma has coached the United States women’s national basketball team from 2009-14. In 2010 and 2014, the US National Team has won the World Championships and they brought home the gold medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
