About Goose Gossage
MLB legend Goose Gossage played 21 seasons in the big leagues for nine different teams, and is best known for his years with the New York Yankees from 1979 to 1983 and San Diego Padres from 1984 to 1987. When he arrived on the scene in 1972 with the Chicago White Sox as a 20-year-old rookie the role of a dominant closing pitcher had yet to be established in the minds of teams around the league. However, as his career progressed it was Gossage who was at the forefront of establishing this role as he dominated his opponents in the later innings of games. During his career he compiled 310 saves and finished 681 of the 1,002 games he appeared in, often pitching as many as three innings per appearance. By the time he retired in 1994 he had accumulated nine All-Star selections and finished in the top five of the Cy Young voting five times. In 2008 Gossage, who holds the Yankees career record with a 2.14 Earned Run Average, was honored for his illustrious career with induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
