Geoff Courtnall

Geoff Courtnall is a retired Canadian professional hockey player who played for 18 seasons in the NHL. A native of Victoria, British Columbia, he had a notable career playing for several storied franchises, amassing 367 goals and 799 points in 1,049 games. He was a six-time 30-goal scorer and reached the 60-point mark seven times.

A left winger known for his speed, physicality, and scoring ability, Courtnall went undrafted before signing with the Boston Bruins. He would spend five seasons with the club before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers, which he helped win the 1988 Stanley Cup. He would go on to play for the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Vancouver Canucks.

He retired from the league in 2000 after experiencing post-concussion syndrome. Courntall estimates he suffered from over twenty concussions throughout his career. He has been open about his struggles with alcohol, used to cope with the damage to his body and the ripple effects of his father, a former professional hockey player as well, passing by suicide. He overcame his vice and quit alcohol in 2010 and has become a huge proponent of mental health initiatives in Canada.

He has since entered real estate and invested in a gold mining venture in South America. Courtnall also established the Archie Courtnall Centre for emergency psychiatric care at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, named after his late father, who battled with depression.
