About Gene Keady
Gene Keady is a legendary Purdue head coach. Keady’s father instilled a passion for sports in Keady at a young age. While attending Kansas State, Keady was a letter-winner in football, basketball, and track. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Keady in the 19th round as the 223rd overall pick in the 1958 NFL Draft, but Keady did not play. With his playing career over, Keady turned to coaching. He received his first coaching position in 1959 at Beloit High School. The only coaching position opened at the time was for basketball. Keady coached the basketball team at Beloit for six years before moving on to Hutchinson Junior College where he served as the assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach. He has also coached at Arkansas, Western Kentucky, Purdue, and the Toronto Raptors as well as at St. Johns. He is most notable for being the head coach of Purdue’s men’s basketball team for 25 years.
