About Dan Issel
Dan Issel is a retired basketball player and coach who last coached with the NBA’s Denver Nuggets in 2001. Issel got his start in basketball as a player at the University of Kentucky in 1966. As a Wildcat, Issel would become a legend, winning two All American awards and setting the record for most career points with 2,138. Along with his career scoring record, Issel set 23 other records and had his jersey retired following his graduation. Issel turned professional in 1970 after being drafted by the ABA’s Kentucky Colonels, playing with them for five seasons before signing with the Denver Nuggets. While with the Nuggets, the ABA and the NBA merged together, allowing Issel to play in the NBA as well. In 15 seasons as a professional, Issel was a six time ABA All Star and one time NBA All Star, along with Rookie of the Year honors and an ABA Championship in 1975. Following his retirement as a player, Issel pursued a coaching career, securing his first head coaching position with the Denver Nuggets from 1992 to 1994, later returning to be their GM and eventual head coach in 1999. Issel retired in 2001 amid some controversy, and has yet to return to the game.
