About Fred Smerlas
Fred Smerlas is a retired NFL defensive end who played 14 years in the league with the Buffalo Bills, the San Francisco 49ers, and the New England Patriots. Prior to his time in the NFL, Smerlas was a star high school football player and wrestler, eventually taking his talents to become a defensive end for Boston College. Following his graduation, Smerlas was drafted in the second round of the 1979 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, remaining with the team for 11 seasons, helping the team go from perennial basement dwellers to constant contenders for the Super Bowl title. In 1990, Smerlas signed on to play with the San Francisco 49ers, playing one season before being traded to the New England Patriots. Smerlas finished his career in New England after a two-year stint with the team, retiring as a five-time Pro Bowler and one of the most successful defensive players in Buffalo Bills history.
