Denny Crum coached the University of Louisville to 675 wins on the basketball court from 1971 to 2001 and guided the Cardinals to two National Championships in 1980 and 1986 to go along with six Final Four appearances. Known as “Cool Hand Luke” for his calm demeanor on the sidelines, Crum got his start in coaching after a stellar playing career at UCLA under legendary head coach John Wooden. Upon graduating from UCLA he joined Wooden’s coaching staff as the freshman basketball coach. The following year he was named head coach at Pierce College, but after four seasons at Pierce he returned to UCLA and helped guide them to three NCAA titles from 1963 to 1971. During his first season at Louisville he guided the Cardinals to 26 wins, a Missouri Valley Conference title and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four. During his first four seasons he led the Cardinals to three Missouri Valley Conference Championships, two Final Fours and a Sweet Sixteen appearance. In 1975 his team joined the Metro Conference and continued to dominate, winning 12 Metro Conference titles and making 16 more trips to the NCAA tournament from 1975 to 1995. During his tenure at Louisville he was named National Coach of the Year three times in 1980, 1983 and 1986. In 1994 Coach Crum was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and earned induction into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
