About David Ayres
David Ayres truly has the kind of story that Hollywood scripts are based on. The 42-year-old Zamboni driver and practice goalie for the Toronto Marlies and Toronto Maple Leafs was thrust into emergency action in an NHL game on February 22, 2020. Both goalies for the Carolina Hurricanes went down due to injury and Ayres entered the action in the second period wearing his Marlies helmet and pads. Although he had nerves early, letting in the first two shots he faced, Ayres stopped the next eight shots to help the Hurricanes win 6-3. Ayres became the first emergency goalie to ever win a game and the oldest goalie to win in his NHL debut. He was not paid for his appearance, but Carolina starting goalie James Reimer gave him a signed stick and he got an autographed bottle of wine from the team's coach, Rod Brind'Amour. Ayres feat also notably came on the 40th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice.
