About Dave Babych
David Babych is a former professional ice hockey defenseman who played 19 seasons in the NHL. A native of Alberta, Canada, he was selected second overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1980 NHL Draft. Babych debuted as a standout star, leading the Jets defense with 44 points in his rookie year and setting various franchise records.
He went to play for multiple clubs, including the Hartford Whalers. Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Los Angeles Kings.
A two-time NHL All-Star, he amassed 142 goals and 723 points in 1,195 games, with a career-high 69 points in the 1985–86 season. He reached the Stanley Cup Finals with Vancouver in 1994, scoring a crucial goal against the New York Rangers. In 1998, a misdiagnosed injury cut his career short.
He has since settled in Northern Vancouver and serves as assistant director of player personnel for the Canucks and coaches youth hockey.
