About Bert Blyleven
Bert Blyleven pitched for 23 seasons in the big leagues with the Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians and California Angels from 1970 to 1992. Blyleven got his start in pro ball after a stellar career at Santiago High School. In 1969 he was selected in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins and made his MLB debut just one year later at the age of 19. During his first season he was a 10-game winner and posted a sparkling 3.18 ERA in 164 innings. During his first seven seasons in Minnesota he was one of the most dominant pitchers in the league, winning 15 or more games from 1971 to 1975 and winning 20 games in 1973 in route to winning his first All-Star selection. In 1976 he was traded to the Texas Rangers, and then joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1978. The following season he helped the Pirates to a World Series Championship. From 1981 to 1985 he played for the Cleveland Indians and earned his second All-Star selection in 1985. He’d go on to play for the Minnesota Twins from 1985 to 1988 and help them to a World Series title in 1987. Blyleven retired in 1992 with 287 career wins and a 3.31 ERA to go along with 3,701 strikeouts. In 2011 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and had his No. 28 jersey retired by the Minnesota Twins.
