About Arthur Agee
The 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams made us familiar with Chicago native Arthur Agee. The film followed Agee and another high school basketball player, William Gates, as they followed their dreams of making the NBA. Siskel and Ebert named it the best film of 1994 and it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. The film followed Agee’s journey from private St. Joseph’s High School back to inner-city public John Marshall High School. He had been recruited to St. Joseph’s, the alma mater of NBA legend Isaiah Thomas, but his parents eventually were unable to pay tuition. Agee played at Arkansas State, but never reached the NBA. He put his fame from the documentary to good use however, starting The Arthur Agee Foundation. The foundation helps children through various life issues. Agee also launched the Hoop Dreams clothing line in 2004.
