About Art Shell
Art Shell is a well-known figure in Oakland Raiders history as both a player and coach. After a 14 year playing career for the Raiders, Shell was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989. Known as an all-time great on the offensive line, he was elected to eight Pro Bowls and four-time All-Pro. Shell played during the Raiders heyday and won three Super Bowls. Following his playing days, he was named the Raiders’ offensive line coach until being promoted to head coach in 1989. Shell was just the third African American to be an NFL head coach and compiled a 54-38 record in his first five seasons. He was the 1900 NFL Coach of the Year after the Raiders went 12-4 and made the AFC Championship Game. Shell was fired in 1994 and served as an offensive line coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons before getting one last shot in Oakland. He finished 2-14 as the head coach of the Raiders in 2006 before departing the franchise once again.
