About Anthony Rizzo
Anthony Rizzo left an All-Star legacy as a person and player during his major league career. While with the Chicago Cubs, Rizzo made three straight All-Star teams from 2014-16. During his first All-Star campaign, he hit .278 with 32 home runs and 78 RBI. In 2016, Rizzo helped the Cubs break a 108-year championship drought and win the World Series. That season, he also won the first of four Gold Glove Awards and a Silver Slugger Award. After a decade as a fan favorite on the North Side, Rizzo was traded to the Yankees in 2021.
The Boston Red Sox originally took Rizzo out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in the sixth round of the 2007 MLB Draft. To get to the major leagues, he had to overcome a Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in 2008, a little more than a year after getting drafted. He was successfully treated and debuted with the San Diego Padres in 2011. Showing flashes of hitting prowess, the Cubs acquired Rizzo before the 2012 season.
With his family being of Sicilian ancestry, he played for Italy in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Rizzo won the Branch Rickey Award in 2014 and the Roberto Clemente Award in 2017 for his work with pediatric cancer patients. The Anthony Rizzo Foundation, founded in 2012, gives aid to families that have a child fighting cancer.
