Soccer Icon Mia Hamm to Receive the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award

A new award is being handed out by the NCAA to recognize the accomplishments of former student-athletes on the college and professional levels. Soccer icon Mia Hamm is one of the six individuals who will initially receive the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award. 

The ceremony to honor these special contributors to sport will take place on January 23 at the NCAA Convention in Orlando, Florida. Other notable retired athletes who will get the award include Lisa Leslie, Jason Varitek and Heath Shuler

Certainly Hamm's status as a trailblazer for women's soccer made her a natural choice for this recognition. She starred at the University of North Carolina then went on to be a universally known for her accomplishments. 

While with the Tar Heels, Hamm led the team to four straight NCAA Championships. She set ACC records for goals, assists and total points. 

Hamm went on to star for the U.S. women's national team from 1987-2004. She competed in four World Cups and three Olympics. 

Hamm set the record for international goals scored by a man or a woman and she currently ranks third. She also ranks third in international caps for Team USA and is the all-time leader for assists. 

Hamm was a two-time FIFA World Player of the Year and the five-time U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year. She is a member of the World Football Hall of Fame, National Soccer Hall of Fame, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
