Heath Shuler

Heath Shuler is a former NFL quarterback who played in the NFL for four seasons. Prior to his time in the NFL, Shuler was a highly recruited quarterback out of high school who won two North Carolina championships. Shuler decided on attending the University of Tennessee on an athletic scholarship, and he became one of the schools top quarterbacks in history, setting almost every passing record at the University of Tennessee. In 1993, Shuler finished second in Heisman Trophy race behind FSU QB Charlie Ward. Shuler entered the 1994 NFL Draft and was selected by the Washington Redskins with the third overall pick. After a long contract negotiation, Shuler signed with the Redskins on a seven year deal, and was seen as the Redskins’ QB of the future. Shuler would struggle in the NFL, and would eventually be benched in favor of Gus Frerotte in 1996. Right after, Shuler was traded to the New Orleans Saints, but injuries would prevent him from playing a full season. Shuler eventually retired as an Oakland Raider in 1998, and went on to serve as a U.S. Representative in Congress.
