About Yusra Mardini
Yusra Mardini has one of the most inspiring stories in sports. Mardini had to flee Syria, making the journey with her sister Sara. They survived despite their boat malfunctioning, which forced them to jump in the water and safely find their way to shore. Despite these tremendous obstacles, Mardini did not let her dreams die and she was a member of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team in 2016. She was also a flagbearer for the team and went on to compete in 2020 as well. Following Mardini's initial Olympic run, she became the youngest ever Goodwill Ambassador for UNHRC. Her story continued to catch the eyes of many as she spoke in front of the UN General Assembly and met with the Pope. Mardini penned the memoir, "Butterfly: From Refugee to Olympian: My Story of Rescue, Hope and Triumph. The Netflix film, "The Swimmers," also chronicled her story.
