Vonetta Flowers Biography

Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Vonetta Flowers was a standout track athlete and attended local University of Alabama at Birmingham on an athletic scholarship. Following her collegiate career, Flowers pursued her dream of making the Olympics for track several times before giving up and switching her focus in a new direction. She took up the sport of bobsledding and immediately found success as a brakewoman. Flowers qualified for the 2002 Olympic Games where her and teammate Jill Bakken brought home the gold medal in the two-woman event, making her the first African American to win gold at the Winter Olympics. She took some time off from the sport following the Olympics but returned in 2004 to win the bronze medal at the World Championships. Flowers competed at the 2006 Olympic Games in Konigssee where she finished 6th and upon completion of the Games retired from the sport.
