About Tyrone Willingham
Following his playing career at Michigan State University, Tyrone Willingham immediately entered the coaching field by accepting a graduate assistant coaching position with his alma maters football team. From there, Willingham moved around the college ranks as a positional coach, mainly on the offensive side of the ball. Despite a lack of experience as an assistant or coordinator, Willingham was named the head coach of the Stanford Cardinals following the 1994 season and led them for 7 seasons with a 44-36-1 record including 4 bowl appearances (only winning 1). In 2001, Willingham was hired as the head coach at the University of Notre Dame where he led the team to a 10-3 season, was named ESPNs Head Coach of the Year, and made an appearance in the Gator Bowl where they lost to North Carolina State. His success at Notre Dame quickly faded and following the 2004 season was fired by the Irish. He then spent 4 seasons as the head coach at the University of Washington where he compiled an 11-37 record, bringing his career total to 76-88-1.
