About Tracy Austin
While she has now retired from playing tennis competitively, Tracy Austin remains as one of the greatest players of her era. Tracys game consisted of a strong forehand and a reliable two-fisted backhand which allowed her to strike the ball deep and with pinpoint accuracy. In 1979 Tracy broke out onto the scene when she defeated Billie Jean King in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and later went on to become the youngest ever US Open Champion at just 16 years old. That feat led the Associated Press to name her Female Athlete of the Year. Since that breakout year she has continued to have success including becoming the World No. 1 ranked professional tennis player in route to winning a career total of three Grand Slam titles. With a career record of 335-90 Tracy was dominant in her career. Following her retirement after several injuries, Austin was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the age of 29 in 1992 making her the youngest ever inductee.
