Terry Francona Biography

Terry Francona, or “Tito,” as he is affectionately called, is a former MLB player and current MLB manager for the Cleveland Indians. Before he was a manager, Francona was an outstanding player at the University of Arizona, winning the Golden Spikes Award in 1980, and was drafted in the first round of the 1980 MLB draft by the Montreal Expos. Francona never panned out at the big leagues, and struggled to stay in the lineup throughout his nine year career. After he retired from playing in 1990, Francona spent time coaching within the White Sox organization, and was eventually offered his first professional manager role with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1997. After three average years with the Phillies, Francona was fired in 2000, and was not hired as a manager until being hired as the manager of the Boston Red Sox in 2004. In his first season with the Red Sox, Francona would lead them to their first World Series title in 86 years. His time with the Red Sox would prove to be extremely successful, winning another World Series in 2007 and constantly being a playoff contender. After a massive late season collapse in 2011 that kept the Red Sox out of the playoffs, Red Sox management decided not to keep Francona, declining his option on his contract. Francona would be out of baseball until becoming the Cleveland Indians manager for the 2013 season, leading them to the playoffs in his first season. Over his first two seasons with the Indians, Francona has compiled a 177-147 record, and looks to return to the playoffs in 2015.
