About Sakura Kokumai
Sakura Kokumai has been competing in karate on an international stage since 2012 when she won a bronze medal in the individual kata event at the World Championships. Kokumai's biggest victory to date came at the 2019 Pan American Games. She competed at the 2020 Olympics, losing the bronze medal match. Kokumai has also become an outspoken voice against anti-Asian-American sentiment. A video of her being harrassed during a training session in 2021 was posted to Instagram and went viral.
