About Roki Sasaki
Rōki Sasaki is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher who is famous for his fast fastball and his record-breaking performances. Born on November 3, 2001, in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, Sasaki plays for the Chiba Lotte Marines in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
Sasaki was nicknamed the “Monster of the Reiwa Era” because he threw a 101 mph (163 km/h) fastball in high school, which was one of the fastest ever recorded in Japanese amateur baseball. He was selected by multiple teams in the 2019 NPB Draft and he joined the Marines, but he skipped the famous Koshien tournament in his final year to preserve his arm.
Sasaki made his NPB debut in 2021, but it was in 2022 that he truly broke out. On April 10, 2022, he threw a perfect game against the Orix Buffaloes, striking out 19 batters—including 13 in a row—tying an NPB record. It was the first perfect game in NPB in 28 years and it made headlines all over the world.
Sasaki is known for his fastball that can reach 100+ mph, splitter that is devastating and control that is exceptional, and he is widely regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the world.
