About Paul Chelimo
Paul Chelimo was originally born in Kenya, but became an American citizen and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He stepped out on the world stage by winning a silver medal in the 5000 meters at the 2016 Olympics. Chelimo set a personal best time in the race of 13:03:90. The medal was the first for an American in the event since the 1964 Olympics. It was a remarkable finish considering he placed just third at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He went on to win a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships. Chelimo began his track career in the States at Shorter College. He helped Shorter win the NAIA National Indoor Championship and the NAIA Outdoor Championship in 2011. Chelimo transferred to UNCG and had back-to-back runner-up finishes in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Championships. He was named Southern Conference Runner of the Year twice.
