About Nate Oats
Nate Oats is the head men's basketball coach at the University of Alabama. Oats previously led the State University of New York at Buffalo to great success. After two seasons as an assistant at UB under Bobby Hurley, Oats was named head coach in 2015. In his first season, the Bulls went 20-15 and then had a great postseason run, winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship. Buffalo was a 14 seed and lost a 69-62 squeaker to eventual Sweet 16 team Miami. He went on to lead the Bulls to back-to-back MAC regular season and tournament championships in 2018 and 2019. Buffalo would also win a game in the NCAA Tournament each year, with Oats being recognized as MAC Coach of the Year. Prior to joining Hurley's staff, Oats was the head coach for 11 years at Romulus High School in Detroit, Michigan. He compiled a 222-52 record and advanced to the state semifinals on five occasions. Oats played college basketball at Division III Marantha Baptist University, where he was an all-conference pick and team captain. He began his coaching career at Marantha and was also an assistant at Wisconsin-Whitewater before moving into the high school ranks.
