About Monty Williams
Monty Williams is a former player head coach in the National Basketball Association. Before becoming a coach Monty was successful as a player. He was an honorable mention All-American at Notre Dame who averaged more than 22 points per game in his senior season. Williams became the 24th overall selection in the 1994 NBA Draft going to the New York Knicks.
In a career that spanned from 1994 until 2003, he racked up nearly 3,000 points and more than 1,200 rebounds. After chronic knee problems forced him to retire he got into coaching for the first time.
For the first five years as a coach he was an assistant for the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers.
Williams got his first opportunity to be a head coach in 2010 as coach of the New Orleans Pelicans. He took the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals in 2021 and then won NBA Coach of the Year in 2022. Williams also spent the 2023-24 season as head coach for the Detroit Pistons.
