Michael Sam Biography

As the first openly gay athlete drafted into the NFL, Michael Sam has been a role model and trailblazer for inclusion in sports.  Sam was a seventh round pick of the St. Louis Rams and also spent time on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.  While he has yet to play in a regular season NFL game, he has still made an indelible impact on the sports world.  Sam came out to his teammates at the University of Missouri prior to his senior year and went on to thrive on the field.  The unanimous All-American won the 2012 SEC Defensive Player of the Year Award.  His 11.5 sacks led the SEC and set a Tigers’ single-season record.  Missouri also surprisingly won the SEC East in their second year in the conference and went on to win the Cotton Bowl.  The 2014 Arthur Ashe Courage Award was presented to Sam in 2014 for his brave confession to the football world.
