About Merton Hanks
Merton Hanks is a 4x Pro Bowl selection, 3x All-Pro selection and Super Bowl XXIX Champion. Hanks attended Lake Highlands High School where he was a distance track and field champion. He then attended the University of Iowa where he played cornerback and earned All-Big Ten honors. He was not very impressive at the NFL combine, but the San Francisco 49ers selected Hanks in the 5th round as the 122nd overall pick in the 1991 NFL Draft. Hanks was well known for his interceptions and returns, but he was most well known for his chicken dance celebrations that were later replicated by Shaquille O’Neal. Hanks spent 1991-1998 with the 49ers, but he spent his last season in 1999 with the Seattle Seahawks. After retiring from playing, Hanks served as the assistant director of operations for the NFL and he currently serves as the NFL Vice President of Operations in charge of player conduct.
