About Martha Karolyi
Martha Karolyi had a distinguished tenure as one of the top gymanstics coaches in the world. From 2001-2016, Karolyi served as the coordinator for the U.S. women's gymanstics program. She oversaw several Olympic champions and her team sent her out on top at the 2016 Olympics. They captured team gold and Simone Biles was the all-around champion. Overall, they won 13 medals at Karolyi's final Games. In 1981, Karolyi defected with her husband and fellow noted coach, Bela, from Romania to the U.S. They built up a successful gymanstics empire in the states and she served as head coach for the 1996 Team USA women's gymanstics squad that won team gold. The Karolyi's beecame well known figures in the gymnastics world for their tutelage of Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci.
