About Lia Thomas
Lia Thomas is an American-born swimmer from Austin, Texas, who gained national attention as being the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I National Championship, competing in the women’s 500-yard freestyle in March 2022 for the University of Pennsylvania. She began her career on the men’s team in 2017 and decided to transition in 2019. After hormone replacement therapy and meeting NCAA requirements for eligibility to compete as a woman, Thomas ranked first overall as a women’s swimmer in the NCAA 500-yard freestyle, previously ranked 65th in the men’s. Her success yielded multiple Ivy League titles, records, criticism, and discussion on the merits of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Thomas graduated in 2022 and is considering law school and still is a major proponent for inclusion in athletics.
