About Les Steckel
Les Steckel had a lengthy career as an NFL coach. Steckel has an interesting background before he even got into coaching as a Golden Gloves boxing champion at the University of Kansas and a Vietnam War veteran. His coaching career began on the college level at Colorado and Navy before he got his NFL opportunity coaching wide receivers with the San Francisco 49ers in 1978. Steckel went on to serve in the same role on Bud Grant's Minnesota Vikings staff for five seasons. He took over for Grant as the team's head coach for one season after his retirement in 1984. Steckel had tenures as an offensive position coach after that with the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos. He joined the Oilers franchise in 1995, helping them with their transition to Tennessee. Steckel became the team's offensive coordinator and helped the newly-named Tennessee Titans reach Super Bowl XXXIV. He spent a season as the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and finished his coaching career with the Buffalo Bills in 2003. Steckel subsequently became the president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
