About Kerri Strug
The iconic images of an 18-year old Kerri Strug landing an impossible vault with an injured ankle to seal a gold medal in the all-around competition for Team USA at the 1996 Olympic Games will forever be etched in history. Though she had to be carried off by her coach, she was on cloud nine and that vault launched her and her teammates to superstardom.
Dubbed the “Magnificent Seven” by the media, Strug and her teammates returned to the United States as national heroes. After being congratulated by President Clinton at the White House Strug made appearances on talk shows, at awards ceremonies and ball games around the country. Sports Illustrated made her their cover girl, and she appeared on the front of the Wheaties box with her gold medal winning teammates.
In 2003 Strug became an elementary school teacher and later worked as an assistant with the U.S. Office of Presidential Student Correspondence and presidential appointee at the Justice Department’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. She’s also been a valuable brand spokesman, and served as an Olympic correspondent for Yahoo!.
