About Johnny Bench
Johnny Bench is hands down, the best catcher in Major League Baseball history. A 14-time All-Star selection and two-time National League MVP, Bench was the leader of the Cincinnati Red’s World Series championship teams in 1975 and 1976, and was the key to the success of Cincinnati’s “Big Red Machine” teams that won six division titles and four NL pennants from 1970 to 1979.
In 1989 Bench was honored with induction to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. The Cincinnati Reds also recognized Bench with induction into their franchise hall of fame in 1986. His No. 5 jersey was also retired that same year.
During his career he signed many lucrative endorsement deals, and in 1989, the same year he was inducted into the hall of fame, he became the first individual baseball player to appear on the cover of a Wheaties box. When his career came to an end he briefly pursued a career in television and as a professional golfer on the Senior PGA Tour. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors for the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
