About Ken Griffey Jr.
Few captured the awe of baseball fans in the 1990s better than Ken Griffey Jr. “The Kid” was beloved from the moment he was called up as a 19 year old in 1989 with the Seattle Mariners. Griffey would go on to 13 All-Star bids, ten Gold Gloves, and an American League MVP Award in 1997. He hit 630 home runs and led the AL in long balls four times while with the Mariners. In 1999, with just over a decade in baseball under his belt, he was named to the All-Century Team. Griffey was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2000 and while injuries robbed him of achieving even more historical feats, he still put together some solid seasons. He would also play part of one season with the Chicago White Sox before returning to Seattle for the final two years of his career. Griffey is now a member of both the Mariners’ and Reds’ Halls of Fame and will be a first ballot choice when eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
