About John Merrick
Not many athletes get to play their college golf in their hometown, but John Merrick got to do just that. After being born and raised in Long Beach, California he set off to play at Long Beach State after a standout prep career in which he won the Moore League High School Championship. In 2001 he won the Southern California Golf Association Amateur Championship and went on to finish as the runner-up at the U.S. Amateur. In 2003 he led the UCLA Bruins to their first ever Pac-10 Conference Championship, earning an individual medal as well. In 2004 he turned pro and joined the Web.com Tour. He captured his first victory in 2006 at the Peek’n Peak Classic. Later that season he earned his PGA Tour Card and has since earned his first victory on tour, capturing the 2013 Northern Trust Open with a playoff victory. Merrick earned his degree in sociology from UCLA in 2004 and is currently a member of the Virginia Country Club in his hometown of Long Beach.
