About John Cappelletti
John Cappelletti is a Penn State legend and member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Cappelletti was the 1973 Heisman Trophy winner while leading the Nittany Lions to an undefeated season. He ran for 1,522 yards and 17 touchdowns his senior seasons and 2,639 yards with 29 touchdowns over his two-year college career. His #22 jersey is the first and only number retired in Penn State Athletics. Cappalletti’s Heisman speech, dedicated to his brother, may be what he is remembered best for. Joey Cappalletti would die of leukemia three years later. As a senior, the older Cappalletti would score four touchdowns in a game after his brother asked for the feat for his 11th birthday. The close bond between brothers was chronicled in a book and subsequent movie both titled, Something for Joey. Following his college career, Cappalletti played ten seasons for the Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers.
