About Jeff Van Gundy
Jeff Van Gundy played his college basketball at Nazareth College and led the Golden Flyers to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984 before earning his degree in 1985. After a stellar collegiate career in which he earned All-American honors as a senior he turned his focus to coaching. His first head-coaching gig was at McQuade Jesuit High School in his native New York. After one season he accepted a graduate assistant position at Providence College, where he helped the Friars to the Final Four under the tutelage of legendary coach Rick Pitino. Upon earning his graduate degree from Providence he signed on as an assistant at Rutgers for two years and then joined the New York Knicks as an assistant in 1989. After six seasons as an assistant he was named head coach of the Knicks in 1995. During his seven years at the helm he led the Knicks to six consecutive playoff appearances and the NBA Finals in 1999. After the 2002 season he was hired as the head coach of the Houston Rockets. He served in that position until 2007 and led the Rockets to three playoff appearances. Following his coaching tenure, he became the lead color commentator for ESPN. He jumped back into the NBA as a coach as the lead assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2024.
