About Digger Phelps
Digger Phelps coached the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 393-195 record from 1971 to 1991 and compiled fourteen 20-win seasons over that span. In 1978 he led Notre Dame to their only final-four appearance in school history, and in 1974 his team became famous for ending UCLA’s historic 88-game win streak. Currently he shares the NCAA record for the most upsets over a #1 team with seven. After he left the sidelines he became an analyst and commentator for ABC, CBS and ESPN. With ABC he provided coverage at the 1984 Olympics as well as for college and professional basketball. After leaving ABC he moved to CBS and became one of the faces of their NCAA Tournament coverage as both an analyst and in-studio broadcaster. After just one year at CBS he made the move to ESPN where he remained until his retirement from the booth in 2014. With 20 years at Notre Dame and 20 years with ESPN on his resume he is one of the most respected voices in the basketball world.
