Jayson Werth

Jayson Werth is a retired outfielder who played 15 seasons for four different teams. An Illinois native, Werth was born in 1979 as the son of a collegiate baseball and football player, who played at Illinois State University and in the farm system under the St. Louis Cardinals, and as the son of an Olympic track athlete to Kim Schofield Werth. As the grandson and nephew of MLB infielders, as well, it is safe to say that athleticism ran in the family blood. Werth starred on youth traveling teams throughout his childhood and intended on playing collegiate baseball at the University of Georgia. Taking the opportunity the enter the MLB Draft instead, he was selected in the first round of the 1997 Draft by the Baltimore Orioles right out of high school. Werth was traded to the Blue Jays shortly after and broke his way into the major leagues in 2002. He has since played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and currently the Washington Nationals. Werth was a World Series Champion in 2008 with the Phillies and an All-Star with the Nationals in 2009. He retired in 2018 and that same year, he was inducted into the Nationals Ring of Honor.
