Glenn Wilson

Glenn Wilson is one of the rare diamond in the rough players that came out of nowhere to become a major league baseball phenom. Although he was a .400 hitter in high school he did not receive one scholarship offer from any school at any level in baseball. Not discouraged by this, Wilson persevered and eventually earned a scholarship to play football at Sam Houston State, where he also played baseball as a walk-on. By the time he left Sam Houston State he’d become a two-time AllAmerican and catch the eye of not only every college in the country, but also every major league scout. In 1980 Wilson went from not being recruited by colleges as a high school senior to being the 18th overall pick in the 1st round overall of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers. After two years in Detroit he joined the Philadelphia Phillies for four seasons and earned an All-Star nod in 1985, finishing that season with 102 RBI and a career high .275 batting average. In 1990 Wilson finished his big league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and moved on to a post baseball life that has included appearances at youth camps around the country as well as speaking engagements where he promotes the attitude that made him a successful ball player and earned him the 1986 MLB “Good Guy” Award.
