About Gayle Gardner
Gayle Gardner is a sportscaster. ESPN hired Gardner in 1983 to serve as an anchor for three years on SportsCenter. After her three years at ESPN, Gardner worked for NBC from 1987-1993 where she served as an anchor. During her time with NBC, Gardner anchored NBC’s New Year’s Day college football bowl game coverage. She also anchored NFL Live!, Major League Baseball: An Inside Look, the French Open and NBC’s “Prudential Sports Updates.” Gardner anchored NBC’s 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics as well. Gardner was named a member of the NBC broadcast team in January 1989 to cover Super Bowl XXIII between the San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals. On August 3, 1993, Gardner became the first woman to do a televised play-by-play of a baseball game. She is considered a pioneer in sports broadcasting as she was the first female sports anchor to appear on major networks weekly. After her time as a sports broadcaster, Gardner took her talents to the Food Network for three years.
