About Gary Patterson
Gary Patterson is the Special Assistant to the Head Coach at Texas after a remarkable run at TCU. Patterson spent over two decades as the head coach of the Horned Frogs after accepting the job in 2000. He is the winningest coach in school history and won over ten games nine times. In 2009, Patterson led the Horned Frogs to a perfect 12-0 regular season. The program was even better the following year, going 13-0, winning the Rose Bowl and finishing ranked #2 in both major polls. Overall, Patterson won the Mountain West five times before leading the school into the Big 12 in 2012. The school had three top ten finishes under his watch while playing in the major conference.
Patterson got his start in college football by attending Kansas State University, where he played safety and linebacker. His first coaching job came in 1982 when he became the assistant coach at Kansas Sate University. Patterson served as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech, UC Davis, Cal Lutheran, Pittsburg State, and Sonoma State, Oregon Lightning Bolts, Utah State, Navy and New Mexico. Patterson transferred to TCU in 1998 and he served as the defensive coordinator there until he was hired as head coach.
