Evelyn Ashford Biography

Evelyn Ashford is a retired American athlete. At age 19, Ashford competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics and finished 5th in the 100 meter event. In 1979, and 1981, Track & Field News ranked Ashford #1 in the world over 100 meters. In 1981, Track & Field News ranked her #1 over 200 meters. Ashford was named Track & Field News Athlete of the Year in 1981 and 1984. She set her first World Record in 1983 by running the 100 meters in 10.79 seconds. She had a chance to win the Gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, but she had to withdraw due to minor injuries. During the 1988 Summer Olympics, Ashford was the flag bearer for the United States at the opening ceremony. Ashford’s last Olympic games took place in Barcelona when she was 35. In 1997, she was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame. Ashford has taken home the Gold in 1984 Olympics for the 100 meters and she has taken home the Gold for the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Olympics in 4X100 m relay.
