About Cathy Turner
Cathy Turner wasa short track speed skater. Turner began skating as a child and she specialized in the fast-paced short-track version of the sport. Turner was the U.S. National Champion by 1979 and a year later, she retired from competitive skating to become a professional pop singer and composer by the name Nikki Newland. Turner took eight years off of skating and she returned to the ice in 1988. Four years later, Turner made it to the U.S. Olympic Team. Turner won the 500-meter race and helped to win the U.S. silver medal in the 3,000-meter relay. After the Olympics, Turner skated professionally with the Ice Capades, but in 1994, she came out of retirement to compete at the Games in Lillehammer where she took home the gold medal in the 500-meter event. Turner placed fifth in 3000-meter relay during the 1998 Winter Olympics. Turner wasknown for her highly aggressive style on the ice.
