About Eric Metcalf
Eric Metcalf is one of the most versatile players in the University of Texas history and is the career leader in all-purpose yards. As a two-sport athlete, Metcalf won the NCAA National Long Jump Championships in 1986 & 1988, setting the Texas school record in the event with 8.44 meters. Despite a promising track and field career as a possible Olympian, Metcalf chose the NFL when he was drafted 13th overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 1989 NFL Draft. Carrying his diversity into the NFL, Metcalf made an immediate impact as both a returner and running back, leading the NFL in both return yards (1,052) and TDs (2) during his second season. He went on to lead the NFL in these categories in 4 different seasons throughout his career and at the time of his retirement he broke into the top 10 for career all-purpose yards in NFL history with 17,230. As a 3x Pro-Bowler Metcalf also sent an NFL record for punt returns for a touchdown in a career with 10, a record that stood until 2011 when it was broken by Devin Hester.
