About Doug Smith
Doug Smith is a retired minor league hockey player who spent ten seasons as a right winger. Before he was a hockey player, Smith spent time as a boxer, eventually turning his love for fighting into a hockey career. Smith got his start at just 19 years old, playing in amateur leagues at 21 and then winning his first minor league championship at 24, helping the Carolina Thunderbirds win the inaugural ECHL Championship in 1989. Over his career, Smith played for six other teams in three different leagues, eventually retiring in 1998. Following his retirement, Smith became a police officer and hockey coach, and is now a critically acclaimed author of the book “Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey.”
