About Dereck Whittenburg
Dereck Whittenburg played his collegiate basketball at North Carolina State and was a member of their 1983 NCAA National Championship team. Prior to playing for the Wolfpack he was a high school All-American at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. During his career at NC State he played for legendary head coach Jim Valvano and earned second team All-ACC honors as a junior. He went on to be selected in the third round of the 1983 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns. After two years in the NBA he re-joined the Wolfpack as an assistant coach from 1985 to 1986 and then served as an assistant at George Mason, Long Beach State, Colorado, West Virginia and Georgia Tech from 1986 to 1999. After the 1999 season he was named head coach at Wagner University and helped them to 67 wins in four seasons and a Northeast Conference Championship in his final season in 2003. In 2003 he was named the new head coach at Fordham University and served in that role for six seasons before taking four years off from coaching and then re-joining the NC State coaching staff in 2013 as a senior assistant coach.
