About Gary Williams
Gary Williams is the assistant Athletic Director at the University of Maryland. Williams attended the University of Maryland where he played point guard on the basketball team. Williams played on the 1965 Sugar Bowl Tournament championship team and the 1966 Charlotte Invitational championship team. Williams’ coaching career began in 1969 at Woodrow Wilson High School where he was a successful basketball coach. He coached the varsity team to the NJSIAA State Championship game, which they won. In 1972, Williams left Wilson High for Lafayette College where he served as the assistant coach. He also served as the assistant coach at Boston College for two seasons. Williams received his first head coaching position in 1978 at American University. Williams has also been the head coach at Boston College, Ohio State and Maryland. In 2001, Williams led the Terrapins to their first Final Four appearance. The following year, Williams and the Terrapins won their first NCAA National Championship. Williams announced his retirement from coaching basketball on May 5, 2011, but he remains with the Maryland athletic department.
